| Radiator fan for SVX Over the past decade or so, we have experienced extreme heat, which has led to high radiator fan usage, and I have recently heard of SVX radiator or condenser fans breaking down. This fan motor has been discontinued for quite some time, but it has become rare to find a used one recently, and when you do come across one, it is priced at an absurd number of times the price of a new one. While most Subaru vehicles have two levels of fan control, strong and weak, the SVX has three levels, and the motor has a four-pole connector. I managed to find a four-pole motor for another vehicle, but the shaft diameter is different, so the SVX's original white fan cannot be used with this motor. When replacing the motor, the fan must also be replaced as a set. Fortunately, the fan diameter appears to be the same. | |
| | The original fan motor is attached from the front of the vehicle and tightened from the back with a washer nut, but the motor I am using is not only quite thin, but the tab is positioned quite far back. Therefore, I decided to attach it to the rear of the shroud. And, the motor diameter is slightly smaller, and the position of the bolt that attaches the motor to the shroud is off by a few millimeters. To compensate for this difference and to ensure that the motor is attached to the center of the shroud, I decided to create an eccentric washer with an offset hole position. By positioning the eccentric washer hole where the diameter is smallest, I can fix the motor exactly in the center. Of course, I also need to machine the hole on the shroud side. |
| In addition, I replaced the spacers to adjust the clearance between the fan and the radiator fins. The spacers that came with the motor were too close to the radiator. In the end, all I needed for installation was the fan motor, the fan, mounting screws, an eccentric washer to secure the motor, and a spacer to adjust the fan height. | | |
| Finally, regarding the electrical connection, unfortunately, the connector shape is completely different. Because it's a location that will be exposed to water, the connector is waterproof. Cutting the wiring and reconnecting it by soldering or crimping is not recommended. While it's possible to remove the pins from the new motor's connector and insert them into the connector of the original motor, this would require repeated repairs every time the motor breaks. The connector becomes brittle over time, so the pins may break. So, I created a conversion cable. I couldn't find the connector for the original motor, but I was lucky enough to find a mating connector for the new motor. By cutting the wiring from the original motor and crimping a connector that fits the new motor, I was able to create a conversion cable. With this conversion cable, the next time you want to replace the motor, all you need to do is remove the connector and insert it into the new one. | |
| About Rebuild Service In order to save as many SVXs as possible, I initially considered providing only parts such as eccentric washers and bolts, but as this would inevitably require special tools for work such as processing the shroud and crimping the wiring, I am now considering a service where I would accept damaged motors along with their shrouds, which I would then process and return to you. Normally, in a rebuild service, I send the finished product first and then have the core returned later, but since there aren't many used parts available at reasonable prices, I don't have any shrouds to offer. This method is not possible. So it looks like I have no choice but to have the actual shroud sent to us and have it processed. The fan shroud you're sending me must be undamaged and in usable condition, and the fan motor connector must be intact. It doesn't matter if the fan is broken, or the motor is burned out or loose. |
| | I expect the cost to be around USD 150 for one side. The cost is USD 250 for both radiator fan and condenser fan. Please pay the shipping cost. I will send it back to you by EMS or parcel post. The shipping fee is a bit high due to the weight. It seems cheaper to send it by sea (parcel post), but it will takes 1 month or more. The cost varies greatly depending on the country, so I would like to calculate it each time. Please note that I cannot guarantee the lifespan of the brand new compatible motors as I have not conducted any long-term tests. Please note that I am not selling them for profit. If you require one, please contact us by email Please note that if the motors and fans used for rebuilding become unavailable, the rebuilding service will end. I appreciate your understanding. |
